1862/63 Match 3 - 10/12/1862 : Britannia C.C. vs Illawarra C.C.

Report

The first game of a home-and-home match between eleven of the Illawarra Club (Wollongong) and eleven of the Britannia Club (Kiama), was played on the Point, on Wednesday last, 10th instant. The weather was exceedingly fine, a cloudless sky and cool sea-breeze prevailing throughout the day. The attendance of spectators was more numerous than on previous occasions; the only drawback in this respect being the almost total absence of the fair sex – a circumstance which, no doubt, had a depressing influence on the spirits of the cricketers, who are proverbial for their gallantry. Mr. Hines pitched a tent upon the ground for the supply of creature comforts, to one of the posts of which was affixed a brilliant flag, the property of the Illawarra Club, which bore the date of establishment. To judge from the number always to be seen in and around the tent, Mr H. must have driven a rattling trade in the sale of fruit, cakes, cigars and various teetotal beverages. Owing to three of the Wollongong players having missed their passages in the steamer which left Wollongong in the morning, and whose arrival overland a telegram stated might be expected about eleven, the game was not commenced till near 12 o’clock – Messrs W. Osbourne, J. Cole and W. Miller being consented to field till the arrival of the absentees. Mr Thrift made his appearance about one o’clock, and as the other two did not come, Messrs W. Osbourne and J. Cole filled their places. The offices of umpires were filled by Messrs R. Miller and A. Gordon – the former acting for the Brittania Club, and the latter for Illawarra.

Illawarra, having won the toss, sent Brittania in to the wickets to the bowling of W. Brown and W. Croft. A. Meares and M. Cronan took the bat; the former after scoring one was caught by Kelly off Brown – 1 wicket for 1 run. S. Turner joined Cronan, and was bowled by Croft for 5 – 2 wickets for 9 runs. T.Fredericks did not score - 3 wickets for 9 runs. G.Turner took the vacant place; he was caught and bowled by Brown - 4 wickets for 14 runs. J. Williams joined Cronan and some splendid batting followed. Cronan fell to Brown; his score consisted of one double and seven singles - 5 wickets for 33. Williams held his position and played the bowling as he liked till joined by the eleventh man, when he was taken by a bail-lifter from Brown; his score consisted of a five, a four, a three, four doubles and thirteen singles, all obtained in a masterly style. The 6th wicket fell for 41, the 7th for 48, the 8th for 49, the 9th for 56 and the 10th for 66.

After the elapse of about fifteen minutes, play was resumed by Illawarra sending Brown and Croft in to the bowling of G. Turner and F. Fredericks. Croft was caught in the slips by Williams off Turner - 1 wicket for 10 runs. W.Osbourne made the next stand, he and Brown batting beautifully together till the latter fell to Fredericks for 9 - 2 wickets for 16. T.Smith was bowled by Fredericks after adding one to the score - 3 wickets for 24. J.Pinkstone now joined W.Osbourne and some dashing play was exhibited; the latter was caught and bowled by G.Turner, his score being two threes, two doubles and five singles - 4 wickets for 34. The 5th wicket fell for 37, the 6th for 38 and the 7th for 51. Kelly's place was taken by Chilby, who added 24 to the score. Pinkstone was stumped by Williams, after having obtained the fine score of 17 - 8 wickets for 69 runs. Chilby was joined successively by G.Smith and J.Cole; he was bowled by Fredericks, his score consisting of one four, a three, six doubles and five singles - 9th and 10th wickets down for 85 - a majority of 19 in favour of Illawarra.

At the conclusion of the innings, the cricketers proceeded to the Steam Packet Inn, where an excellent and substantial lunch was served by Host Adams. The day being far advanced, little time was lost before the players again assembled at the ground.
About four o'clock, Kiama sent Meares and Cronan to the wickets. The latter was declared out leg before wicket after obtaining 3 - 1 wicket for 3 runs. G.Turner followed, and after a double and a single, was run out - 2 wickets for 7. J.Williams joined Meares; the latter shortly falling to Brown for 1 - 3 wickets and 8 runs. The 4th fell for 9; the 5th for 15; and the 6th for 16. F.Fredericks joined Williams, and the score proceeded at an improved pace; Williams unfortunately hit his wicket in offering at a ball from Brown; his score made up of one three, two doubles and 3 singles - 7 wickets for 29. Fredericks fell to Croft, having added 16 to the score - 8 wickets and 35 runs. the 9th and 10th wickets fell for a total of 43.

Illawarra had now only 25 to get to win, which they calculated upon doing with two or three bats. Croft and Kelly went in. The former was cleverly caught by S.Turner behind the wicket. Thrift came next, but did not score. T.Smith joined Kelly, but was caught by Williams at short slip. Kelly retired for 9, and G.Smith was caught by Turner for nil - 5 wickets and 18 runs. This pace did not seem to meet with the approval of our Illawarra friends, and in order to alter it, Pinkstone and Brown took up the batting; these two soon obtained the required number of runs, and the game closed - Illawarra winning by one run, and having five wickets to spare. the victors were heartily cheered at the finish of the game. Uninterrupted harmony and good humour prevailed during the day.

REMARKS
ILLAWARRA - The above analysis, which is correct in its material poinrs, will enable the reader to form a pretty correct idea of the relative powers of the different bowlers. It will be seen that Brown, although carrying off the palm as regards the number of wickets taken, loses considerably on comparing the amount of runs obtained from each off the same number of balls. Brown delivered 108 in both innings of which 50 runs were made; Croft delivered 102 from which only 46 were obtained; in other respects the "honours seem to be easy". The bowling of both was marked throughout the game by steadiness and judgement. With regard to fielding and batting, the latter seems to be the point in which the Illawarra eleven show most to advantage. The performances of Chilby, Pinkston and Brown showed finish and style of no ordinary character. The fielding was not so good as we were led to expect, and that of the Britannia eleven will bear comparison with it. Some very easy catches were missed in the first part of the game. The backstopping of J.Osbourne deserves notice, and elicited much praise from the spectators.
BRITANNIA - G.Turner delivered, during the game, 120 balls from which 49 runs were obtained. F.Fredericks bowled 120 balls, from which 45 runs were scored. Of wickets, Turner counts 3, whilst Fredericks lays claim to 6. It would not be fair, however, to take the above as a criterion of Mr Turner's abilities as a bowler - the game just played being the first one in which he has figured during the last two seasons - when in practice, he is acknowledged to be not only good but "very dangerous". Mr Fredericks can never expect to attain to excellence whilst he pursues his present course of changing from round arm to underarm; one or other method must be steadily adhered to in order to insure perfection. It is not necessary to criticise the doings of our men at the wickets and in the field, as their abilities are pretty well known already. On the present occasion, with the exception of Messrs Williams, Cronan and F.Fredericks, the batting was decidedly inferior to that displayed on former occasions. The fielding, with the exception of some bungling about the wickets on the return of the ball, was very fair. S.Turner as long stop did his part in a manner deserving of the highest praise - his stopping elicited the admiration of all present.
In conclusion, we must admit that the Britannia eleven have received a sound beating, and also that they deserved it. They have been so fortunate during the past couple of seasons that they have been led to eschew practice and organisation, and trust entirely to "luck"; a looseness altogether at variance with success ha characterised their proceedings of late. It is to be hoped that this will be speedily remedied, and that the bitter draught administered on Wednesday will be instrumental in wholly eradicating the many little weaknesses in which the Britannia Club has lately given way.

1862/63 Match 2 - 27/10/1862 : Britannia C.C. vs Illawarra Marylebone C.C.

Report

ILLAWARRA MARYLEBONE V. BRITANNIA CRICKET CLUB.

This game (the result of which was given in our issue of last week) was played on Monday, the 27th ultimo, at Kiama. The weather was very favorable, and the attendance of spectators large. A good deal of interest was felt In the game by the patrons of cricket in our locality, it being the first trial, for a number of years, of the respective merits of the Illawarra and Kiama cricketers, when placed in competition ; and as both parties were expected to put in their very best appearance, the event gave promise of a well-contested and exciting game. Tho anticipation of a superior team from Wollongong was fully verified— the eleven composing, with one or two exceptions, its best bats. Some alteration in the Kiama players was found to be unavoidable, which was not calculated to add to their strength.

At eleven o'clock the Britannias sent W. Gordon and J. Sproule to the wickets, to the bowling of J. Murray and T. Galvin. The first of the first over (Murray) split Gordon's wicket, whose place was filled and vacated in quick succession by Abbot, A. Gordon, Turner, Williams, and Miller, 'who came and went' for little or nothing. Young Sproule held his bat for a considerable time against very severe bowling : he was run out after obtaining five singles. The innings terminated for 36 runs.

Marylebone immediately sent T. Galvin and S. Daley to the bowling of F. Fredericks and A. Gordon. Galvin, after scoring 7, bungled a ball from Gordon on his wicket. Daley was joined successively by Lahiff, J. Murray, and J. Galvin, tho two former being run out. Devlin succeeded S. Daley, and sent the score 17 ahead, A full-pitch from Fredericks took his wicket; the rest following quickly. Total of innings, 48.

After luncheon, Kiama again took the willow; and — whether invigorated by the refreshments, or owing to a change of weather (a slight shower was falling) - made a decided improvement on their first innings. The scoring lay almost entirely with A. Gordon, Hukins, King, and T. Fredericks — the former being stumped by M. Murray. The innings closed for 66.

Wollongong, having the moderate score 55 to get to win, went to the wickets in high spirits ; and from the style in which Daley and J. Murray set to work, there was every appearance of their coming off victorious. Daley, however, after scoring two trios, a double, and three singles, fell to Gordon ; and Murray's course was cut short by a catch to Hukins. J. Galvin, Devlin, and M. Murray, disappeared for a single each. T. Galvin made his appearance on the fall of the fifth wicket, and commenced with two slashing drives four each, followed by a single and a three. He was bowled by Gordon for 12. At this point the excitement became intense. Four wickets to go down — only 15 runs to win — everything looked healthy for Wollongong. But alas! the sequal proves that their tutelar deity is not exempt from fickle propensities. As the game drew to a close, bowling and fielding appeared to receive fresh impetus, and the remaining wickets fell rapidly — Lahiff carrying out his bat. Total of second innings, 50— just five runs short of the required number.

The round-arm bowling of J. Murray was certainly the finest seen on the Kiama ground for some time. Throughout the game it was marked by a steadiness judgment of pitch, and speed, which is rarely attained save by professional bowlers. — A. Gordon deserves great credit for his unflagging exertions during the day ; his bowling was excellent and effective. F. Fredericks seemed slightly out of tune, his bowling being at times unsteady and sadly wanting in truth — mishaps that seldom occur with Frank.

The batting and fielding of the Marylebone men showed plainly the advantage of frequent and thorough practice. They looked and seemed to feel cricket. The Kiama team — considering their want of practice — worked admirably, vicing one with the other in their endeavors to bring the game to a favorable issue. The manner in which they played a decidedly up-hill match needs no comment, and they may justly feel proud of the laurels gained upon this occasion.

1862/63 Match 1 - 30/9/1862 : Single Men vs Married Men (Intra-Club)

Report

On Thursday evening last, a meeting of members of the Britannia Cricket Club was held in the Council Chamber. The attendance was small; but those who did favour the Secretary's call were of the right stamp, and a fair start was made towards opening the present season. Owing to the rather lax manner in which the business of the club had been conducted last year, the Treasurer's report was looked for with considerable interest., if not misgiving; but we are happy to state (especially for the satisfaction of any of the members who may happen to be timid) that the "budget", laid before the meeting by Mr. R. Pickerman, was far from being so gloomy as many had anticipated. The names of four new members - Messrs. J. Williams, G. Miller, R.H. Owen and S. King - were placed on the books of the club. A match was arranged for Tuesday, the 30th inst. - eleven "married" and eleven "single" to be competitors. It is to be hoped that the representatives of these two distinct and somewhat antagonistic "institutions" will muster in force. There has been some talk about visiting Wollongong soon; and, in fact, if our cricketers intend playing a match this season to which any interest will attach, we cannot see how they are to avoid doing so, there being no game fit to fly at for a long way south of that place. This question, however, will shortly be settled; and should such an event take place, we have every confidence in the bats of this district giving a good account of themselves at the wickets of the long-established and, we believe, distinguished Illawarra Cricket Club.
Kiama Examiner. Tuesday 23 September 1862

CRICKET
On Tuesday last a match was played between eleven married men and eleven single, which resulted in honor of the married men, by one run. It will, perhaps, be in the recollection of most of our cricket readers, that a match was played last season between the married and single, which terminated in favour of the single team, by one run. We presume that a conquering game will be played during the present season, to decide who are the best. We append the score:-
CHALLENGE - We understand that an "invitation" has been received from the Secretary of the Marylebone Club, Wollongong to play a friendly game on a day to be mutually agreed upon. It is to be hoped that the challenge will be accepted, and the necessary arrangements made as speedily as possible.

1861/62 Match 3 - 22/4/1862 : Shoalhaven C.C vs Britannia C.C

Report

The return game between these two districts was played at Shoalhaven on Tuesday last, the 22nd instant. The day was rather dull, and some very heavy clouds threatened a plentiful supply of an element by no means favourable to the sport; but with the exception of two or three smart showers, between 1 and 2 o'clock, the weather might be termed fine. Messrs. Hyam and Torey were present, with a very praiseworthy object in view, viz., that of alleviating the sufferings of the thirsty. Their humane efforts, were, however, it would appear, not in keeping with "instructions" issued to the constabulary, for scarcely had they got their traps put to rights when Mr. "Brown" appeared and forbad the sale of anything vulgarly known as ardent, Mr. Hyam removed his liquors at once, but friend Torey was not to be done: he sold his sheroots at sixpence each and gave a glass of liquor into the bargain ,- finally, the cigars running out, nicely packed bundles of straws were substituted, and strange as it may read, sold quite as readily as their more odorous predecessors. Owing to the gloomy appearance of the day, the players were favoured with a very limited attendance of visitors; but to- wards the finish of the game, the arrival of about a dozen ladies added greatly to the attractions of the occasion. The play was not commenced till half-past 11, at which hour - Shoalhaven having won the toss - both teams shook themselves together, and the game commenced by Kiama sending Messrs. A. Gordon and J. Anderson to the wickets, to the bowling of Messrs. J. McNabb and James Thurgate. Kiama held the wickets for two hours, running up a score of 96. The batting was excellent, only one 0 appearing on the paper at the conclusion of the innings. This mishap occurred to S. Turner, shortly after taking his place, - the ball (one of Thurgate's) breaking sharply from off to leg. Anderson - one of the first men in - saw eight of his colleagues out. After making the magnificent score of 42, he was caught by A. Hyam off McNabb. His play elicited great applause, and truly it was well merited. His score consisted of 19 singles, 7 doubles, a 3 and a 6. The innings terminated by F. Fredericks being stumped by McNabb - G. Miller carrying out his bat. The following is the score,

At half-past 1 o'clock, Kiama took the field; and Messrs. Bice and A. Hyam went in to the bowling of F. Fredoricks and A. Gordon. This was a very short innings; A. Hyam being the only bat of the eleven who made anything like a stand. He played cautiously and steadily, and seven wickets fell before he retired. The total of the first innings was only 29. Shoalhaven courteously agreed to "follow their innings," and although they struggled pluckily to turn the tide of ill-luck, the effort was unsuccessful. Bice fell to the first ball from T. Campbell; and Hyam, immediately afterwards, was caught by A. Gordon off Williams, for 0. James Thurgate and W. Gollan, held their positions for a considerable time, but finally gave way to Fredericks' bowling. The batting of J. Thurgate in this innings must not be overlooked; and although he only added 12 to the score, his graceful and finished style, together with his excellent judgment, elicited the admiration of the spectators. The game terminated at 5 o'clock, Kiama winning in one innings, with 24 runs to spare.

At 7 o'clock, about thirty persons sat down to dinner in the large room of the Royal Hotel. The dinner was prepared by Mrs. Isaacs, and the viands proved their excellence by the manner in which they disappeared. Mr. Bice occupied the chair; and Mr. J. Black the vice-chair; the company separated at 10 o'clock, after having enjoyed a very pleasant evening.

1861/62 Match 2 - 17/3/1862 : Jamberoo vs Britannia C.C

Report

A Practice match between the above Clubs came off at Jamberoo on Monday last (St. Patrick's Day). The weather, unfortunately, was very unfavourable, and the ground in bad condition. Towards the end of the Jamberoo first innings the ball was unfit for playing with, but no others were at hand. The match was won by Jamberoo, with five wickets to spare. A lunch, prepared by Mr. Curry, was on the ground, of which the players partook in the midst of the rain, for as the day seemed as if it would be propitious until about 11 o'clock, there was no shelter prepared. It would be needless to criticise the play on such a day, so we merely append the score.

1861/62 Match 1 - 7/2/1862 : Britannia C.C vs Shoalhaven C.C

Report

A meeting was held on Wednesday evening last, in the Council Chambers, Kiama, for the purpose-- as notified by advertisement - of choosing from amongst the cricketers of this district an efficient eleven to play Shoalhaven a friendly game on the 3rd of January. The attendance, contrary to expectation, was very meagre ; but not withstanding this, the few gentlemen present determined to go through with the business without further delay. After the challenge had been formally accepted, and some other business connected with the meeting settled ,a committee, consisting of three of the gentlemen present, was appointed to name the eleven. The selection is as follows: J. Williams, M. Cronan, A. Gordon, J. King, F. Fredericks, T. Fredericks, S. Turner, W. Christie, A. D. Meares, W. Miller, and J. Black. Owing to harvest operations, which are at present in full sway, it was deemed advisable to communicate with Shoalhaven, in order to have the match postponed till the 8th of January instead of the 3rd. It will be seen in another column, that Thursday next has been set apart for a practice day; and that on New Year's Day, the eleven challenge all comers to a trial of skill. It is to be hoped that the cricketers will turn out strong on these occasions
Kiama Examiner. Tuesday 24 December, 1861

CRICKET - SHOALHAVEN V KIAMA
It is understood that the match for some time pending between these clubs will be commenced in Kiama on Monday next 27th instant. As Monday will be a general holiday (being the day fixed for celebrating the anniversary of the colony), it is to be hoped that the eleven which have been chosen to represent this district will not fail to make an early appearance. The Shoalhaveners are bent upon regaining the bays lost to Kiama last season, and it will require a steady and efficient team to prevent their doing so ;- they were soundly beaten last year by the Britannia Club, and surely (even admitting the great apathy prevalent amongst our cricketers this season) an eleven picked from the whole district, will be able to "repeat the dose". I is clear that the absence of our "gallant captain" - at present vegetating somewhere in the locality of Major's Creek Diggings, and who, for a time, has shelved the willow in favour of the pick and cradle - has thrown the wet sheet over the cricketing propensities of a majority of the Britannia's members.
Kiama Examiner. Tuesday 21 January 1862

CRICKET - SHOALHAVEN V KIAMA
This long pending match was commenced in Kiama on Friday last, 7th instant; but, owing to the very unfavourable weather, only three innings were got through. The rain, which had been threatening during the fore part of Thursday, commenced about noon, and continued in showers up to 11 a.m. on Friday. The day remained gloomy and "muggy" till close upon 5 p.m. when the rain commenced in earnest, and continues up to Monday.
Several of the Kiama team were very tardy in making their appearance; and towards 11 o'clock it was suggested by Mr Biddulph (captain of the Shoalhaven eleven) that the opposite party should commence their innings; accordingly the stumps were pitched, and precisely at 11 Kiama commenced.
THE PLAY
Messrs. Meares and Christie took their places at the wickets, to the bowling of Biddulph and Thurgate. Christie opened the batting with a fine cut for 1 over short slip's head, off Biddulph; but was stumped by Biddulph in the second over, in trying to get one of Thurgate's slows away - 1 wicket for 1. S.Turner joined Meares, and after a hit to leg for 2, was bowled by Thurgate - 2 wickets for 3. Gordon followed, and in his usual slashing style rapidly ran up a score of 25, hitting the bowling to all parts of the field, for four singles, six doubles, a 4 and a 5. he was bowled by Biddulph - 3 wickets for 36. Cronan went in next, but unfortunately fell on to his wicket before he had a chance to score - 4 wickets for 36. Anderson took the vacant place. After some very steady play, Meares was bowled for 11 - 5 wickets for 46. T. Fredericks succeeded, making some slashing hits; and Anderson was bowled by Biddulph for 8 - 6 wickets for 53. F.Fredericks joined his brother, and McClarran relieved Thurgate at the bowling. McClarran bowled a wide, and shortly after bowled F. Fredericks for 0 - 7 wickets for 63. J. King took the vacant place, and made some very fine play. T. Fredericks was, after making the handsome score of 27, caught by Biddulph - 8 wickets for 80. Miller went in next, and King's stumps fell to McClarran for 11 - 9 wickets for 95. Black followed King, to the bowling of Bice, who had relieved McClarran, and was bowled by Biddulph for 4. Miller, not out, 17. All out for 112.

At quarter past 1 p.m. Shoalhaven sent in James Thurgate and Ryan, to the bowling of F. Fredericks and Gordon. Fredericks bowled a maiden and Ryan's stumps fell without score - 1 wicket for 0. Hyam joined Thurgate, and Gordon bowled a maiden. After a drive forward for 1, Hyam was bowled by Gordon - 2 wickets for 1. Bice took the bat next, and Thurgate was bowled by Gordon for 2 - 3 wickets for 10. McClarran joined Bice, and lost his wicket for 1 - 4 wickets for 11. John Thurgate succeeded McClarren. Fredericks bowled two maidens, and Miller missed a catch. These two settled down to work and made some very fine hits which added materially to the score. cronan took Fredericks' place at the bowling, and after a maiden by each bowler, Thurgate's stumps were lowered by Gordon for 9 - 5 wickets for 39. Biddulph followed, and "spooned" one of Cronan's slows into Miller's hands, scoring 4 - 6 wickets for 48. John Monaghan took the vacant place and was bowled by Gordon without score - 7 wickets for 48. McPherson came next, and Fredericks took the bowling from Cronan, the former was caught by Anderson at point for 3 - 8 wickets for 51. After a maiden from Fredericks, Ballantine was bowled by Gordon for nil - 9 wickets for 52. James Monaghan joined Bice, and after a maiden from Gordon, Bice was caught by Gordon for 27. All out for 52.

A few minutes before 3 o'clock Kiama sent in Christie and Turner to the wickets, to the bowling of Biddulph and McClarren. Turner was caught by Bice off Biddulph for 1 - 1 wicket for 5. Meares went in next, and after a maiden from Biddulph, Christie was bowled by McClarren for four singles and a double - 2 wickets for 7. T.Fredericks next made an appearance, and after a maiden from Biddulph, was caught by Bice off the latter bowler for 1 - 4 wickets for 23. Cronan now mated Anderson, and Thurgate relieved McClarren at the bowling. Both batsmen scored rapidly - Anderson making five singles, four doubles and four, a five and a 6, giving a chance to Monaghan, which was not taken, but was finally bowled by Thurgate for 28 - 5 wickets for 45. Gordon succeeded Anderson, and commenced with a double off Thurgate to long off; Cronan making some fine hits for threes and a four - Biddulph shivered his timbers for 17 - 6 wickets for 57. F.Fredericks filled the vacancy. Fredericks gave a chance to point, but it was missed, and was bowled by Thurgate for three singles - 6 wickets for 69. Miller now joined Gordon, and both were playing steadily when the rain commenced. It being close on 5 o'clock and getting dark, it was agreed upon to draw the stumps till the following morning. This was accordibgly done, and the game stood -

The cricketers adjourned to the welcome shelter of the Steam Packet Inn. At 6 o'clock the two elevens and several of their friends sat down to an excellent dinner provided by Host Adams. It is unnecessary, to say that ample justice was done to the repast by the assembled company. The usual complimentary toasts were drunk, speeches made, and songs sung, and all separated about 10 o'clock apparently well satisfied with their entertainment.

Saturday morning proved very wet, so much so that the idea of following up the play was abandoned. Shoalhaven, acknowledging the very slight chance they had of winning, graciously declared Kiama the winner of the game.

The play throughout the match was, with a few exceptions, excellent. The fielding on both sides being superior to anything seen here before - especially that of the Kiama team. Much more, however, was expected from the Shoalhaven men, who, although they did very well, disappointed many who booked them to win on the previous evening. It may be mentioned here that Mr Biddulph is anything but at home when "heaving the leather" on our rough and un-cared for ground; and he experienced much difficulty on this account. We understand that the return match will take place on Easter Tuesday, 22nd April.
