1862/63 Match 3 - 10/12/1862 : Britannia C.C. vs Illawarra C.C.

Report

The first game of a home-and-home match between eleven of the Illawarra Club (Wollongong) and eleven of the Britannia Club (Kiama), was played on the Point, on Wednesday last, 10th instant. The weather was exceedingly fine, a cloudless sky and cool sea-breeze prevailing throughout the day. The attendance of spectators was more numerous than on previous occasions; the only drawback in this respect being the almost total absence of the fair sex – a circumstance which, no doubt, had a depressing influence on the spirits of the cricketers, who are proverbial for their gallantry. Mr. Hines pitched a tent upon the ground for the supply of creature comforts, to one of the posts of which was affixed a brilliant flag, the property of the Illawarra Club, which bore the date of establishment. To judge from the number always to be seen in and around the tent, Mr H. must have driven a rattling trade in the sale of fruit, cakes, cigars and various teetotal beverages. Owing to three of the Wollongong players having missed their passages in the steamer which left Wollongong in the morning, and whose arrival overland a telegram stated might be expected about eleven, the game was not commenced till near 12 o’clock – Messrs W. Osbourne, J. Cole and W. Miller being consented to field till the arrival of the absentees. Mr Thrift made his appearance about one o’clock, and as the other two did not come, Messrs W. Osbourne and J. Cole filled their places. The offices of umpires were filled by Messrs R. Miller and A. Gordon – the former acting for the Brittania Club, and the latter for Illawarra.

Illawarra, having won the toss, sent Brittania in to the wickets to the bowling of W. Brown and W. Croft. A. Meares and M. Cronan took the bat; the former after scoring one was caught by Kelly off Brown – 1 wicket for 1 run. S. Turner joined Cronan, and was bowled by Croft for 5 – 2 wickets for 9 runs. T.Fredericks did not score - 3 wickets for 9 runs. G.Turner took the vacant place; he was caught and bowled by Brown - 4 wickets for 14 runs. J. Williams joined Cronan and some splendid batting followed. Cronan fell to Brown; his score consisted of one double and seven singles - 5 wickets for 33. Williams held his position and played the bowling as he liked till joined by the eleventh man, when he was taken by a bail-lifter from Brown; his score consisted of a five, a four, a three, four doubles and thirteen singles, all obtained in a masterly style. The 6th wicket fell for 41, the 7th for 48, the 8th for 49, the 9th for 56 and the 10th for 66.

After the elapse of about fifteen minutes, play was resumed by Illawarra sending Brown and Croft in to the bowling of G. Turner and F. Fredericks. Croft was caught in the slips by Williams off Turner - 1 wicket for 10 runs. W.Osbourne made the next stand, he and Brown batting beautifully together till the latter fell to Fredericks for 9 - 2 wickets for 16. T.Smith was bowled by Fredericks after adding one to the score - 3 wickets for 24. J.Pinkstone now joined W.Osbourne and some dashing play was exhibited; the latter was caught and bowled by G.Turner, his score being two threes, two doubles and five singles - 4 wickets for 34. The 5th wicket fell for 37, the 6th for 38 and the 7th for 51. Kelly's place was taken by Chilby, who added 24 to the score. Pinkstone was stumped by Williams, after having obtained the fine score of 17 - 8 wickets for 69 runs. Chilby was joined successively by G.Smith and J.Cole; he was bowled by Fredericks, his score consisting of one four, a three, six doubles and five singles - 9th and 10th wickets down for 85 - a majority of 19 in favour of Illawarra.

At the conclusion of the innings, the cricketers proceeded to the Steam Packet Inn, where an excellent and substantial lunch was served by Host Adams. The day being far advanced, little time was lost before the players again assembled at the ground.
About four o'clock, Kiama sent Meares and Cronan to the wickets. The latter was declared out leg before wicket after obtaining 3 - 1 wicket for 3 runs. G.Turner followed, and after a double and a single, was run out - 2 wickets for 7. J.Williams joined Meares; the latter shortly falling to Brown for 1 - 3 wickets and 8 runs. The 4th fell for 9; the 5th for 15; and the 6th for 16. F.Fredericks joined Williams, and the score proceeded at an improved pace; Williams unfortunately hit his wicket in offering at a ball from Brown; his score made up of one three, two doubles and 3 singles - 7 wickets for 29. Fredericks fell to Croft, having added 16 to the score - 8 wickets and 35 runs. the 9th and 10th wickets fell for a total of 43.

Illawarra had now only 25 to get to win, which they calculated upon doing with two or three bats. Croft and Kelly went in. The former was cleverly caught by S.Turner behind the wicket. Thrift came next, but did not score. T.Smith joined Kelly, but was caught by Williams at short slip. Kelly retired for 9, and G.Smith was caught by Turner for nil - 5 wickets and 18 runs. This pace did not seem to meet with the approval of our Illawarra friends, and in order to alter it, Pinkstone and Brown took up the batting; these two soon obtained the required number of runs, and the game closed - Illawarra winning by one run, and having five wickets to spare. the victors were heartily cheered at the finish of the game. Uninterrupted harmony and good humour prevailed during the day.

REMARKS
ILLAWARRA - The above analysis, which is correct in its material poinrs, will enable the reader to form a pretty correct idea of the relative powers of the different bowlers. It will be seen that Brown, although carrying off the palm as regards the number of wickets taken, loses considerably on comparing the amount of runs obtained from each off the same number of balls. Brown delivered 108 in both innings of which 50 runs were made; Croft delivered 102 from which only 46 were obtained; in other respects the "honours seem to be easy". The bowling of both was marked throughout the game by steadiness and judgement. With regard to fielding and batting, the latter seems to be the point in which the Illawarra eleven show most to advantage. The performances of Chilby, Pinkston and Brown showed finish and style of no ordinary character. The fielding was not so good as we were led to expect, and that of the Britannia eleven will bear comparison with it. Some very easy catches were missed in the first part of the game. The backstopping of J.Osbourne deserves notice, and elicited much praise from the spectators.
BRITANNIA - G.Turner delivered, during the game, 120 balls from which 49 runs were obtained. F.Fredericks bowled 120 balls, from which 45 runs were scored. Of wickets, Turner counts 3, whilst Fredericks lays claim to 6. It would not be fair, however, to take the above as a criterion of Mr Turner's abilities as a bowler - the game just played being the first one in which he has figured during the last two seasons - when in practice, he is acknowledged to be not only good but "very dangerous". Mr Fredericks can never expect to attain to excellence whilst he pursues his present course of changing from round arm to underarm; one or other method must be steadily adhered to in order to insure perfection. It is not necessary to criticise the doings of our men at the wickets and in the field, as their abilities are pretty well known already. On the present occasion, with the exception of Messrs Williams, Cronan and F.Fredericks, the batting was decidedly inferior to that displayed on former occasions. The fielding, with the exception of some bungling about the wickets on the return of the ball, was very fair. S.Turner as long stop did his part in a manner deserving of the highest praise - his stopping elicited the admiration of all present.
In conclusion, we must admit that the Britannia eleven have received a sound beating, and also that they deserved it. They have been so fortunate during the past couple of seasons that they have been led to eschew practice and organisation, and trust entirely to "luck"; a looseness altogether at variance with success ha characterised their proceedings of late. It is to be hoped that this will be speedily remedied, and that the bitter draught administered on Wednesday will be instrumental in wholly eradicating the many little weaknesses in which the Britannia Club has lately given way.
