1853/54 Match 2 - 5/6/1854 : Kiama vs Wollongong

Report

I enclose the score of the return match between the Kiama Club and the Wollongong Club, with two players out of the Dapto Club, which was played here on the 5th instant. As previously agreed, the Kiama Club took the wicket first, and held it for some time, making a score of 89 runs. The Wollongong Club then followed, making a score of 74, leaving their opponents the conquerors in this innings by 15 runs. As it was past three o'clock by this time, it was agreed to play on as late as the sun would allow, and finish the match on the next day. This was agreed to by all parties, and upon one of the Kiama players calling the attention of their umpire to the sun being full in his face, and the improbability of his seeing the ball, he very properly drew his stumps. This was within 10 minutes of sun down. This arrangement could not have injured the Wollongong players, but they appear to have been bent on quarrelling, and seeing the hopelessness of their case, they returned to their inn, as we understood, with the intention of playing it out on the morrow, but really to prepare for a return to Wollongong, which they did. The Kiama players repaired to their post in the morning, and after waiting till 4 o’clock, their opponents not appearing, they claimed the victory. What, may I ask, is your opinion upon such conduct!

[Taking our correspondent's statement to be substantially correct, our opinion is decidedly adverse to the course pursued by the Wollongong players. The only difficulty which presents itself to our mind is whether it was distinctly arranged to play only as long as the sun would allow, or until sunset. In the former case the Kiama umpire was justified in drawing his stumps.-EDS. B. L. S.]
