1862/63 Match 1 - 30/9/1862 : Single Men vs Married Men (Intra-Club)

Report

On Thursday evening last, a meeting of members of the Britannia Cricket Club was held in the Council Chamber. The attendance was small; but those who did favour the Secretary's call were of the right stamp, and a fair start was made towards opening the present season. Owing to the rather lax manner in which the business of the club had been conducted last year, the Treasurer's report was looked for with considerable interest., if not misgiving; but we are happy to state (especially for the satisfaction of any of the members who may happen to be timid) that the "budget", laid before the meeting by Mr. R. Pickerman, was far from being so gloomy as many had anticipated. The names of four new members - Messrs. J. Williams, G. Miller, R.H. Owen and S. King - were placed on the books of the club. A match was arranged for Tuesday, the 30th inst. - eleven "married" and eleven "single" to be competitors. It is to be hoped that the representatives of these two distinct and somewhat antagonistic "institutions" will muster in force. There has been some talk about visiting Wollongong soon; and, in fact, if our cricketers intend playing a match this season to which any interest will attach, we cannot see how they are to avoid doing so, there being no game fit to fly at for a long way south of that place. This question, however, will shortly be settled; and should such an event take place, we have every confidence in the bats of this district giving a good account of themselves at the wickets of the long-established and, we believe, distinguished Illawarra Cricket Club.

CRICKET
On Tuesday last a match was played between eleven married men and eleven single, which resulted in honor of the married men, by one run. It will, perhaps, be in the recollection of most of our cricket readers, that a match was played last season between the married and single, which terminated in favour of the single team, by one run. We presume that a conquering game will be played during the present season, to decide who are the best. We append the score:-
CHALLENGE - We understand that an "invitation" has been received from the Secretary of the Marylebone Club, Wollongong to play a friendly game on a day to be mutually agreed upon. It is to be hoped that the challenge will be accepted, and the necessary arrangements made as speedily as possible.
