Foreword - or "Driving on the Up Through Cover"

A question that has been posed to me – and by me - for a number of years is “how would you go about writing a history of the Kiama Cricket Club?” It’s not an easy question to answer or an easy task to ponder. Let’s face it; this is the Kiama Cricket Club. A Club whose members are as fiercely loyal as they are keen for a beer or ten after the game is won or done. A Club whose members are better sledgers of their own teammates than any opposing team could ever hope to be. A Club whom itself coined the wonderful phrase “Kiama Kollapse” to explain away the consistent failings of its batting line-up.
As of August 1st 2012, there have been just a few under 900 people who have made an appearance on the field for the Club in one of its four Grades since the formation of the South Coast District Cricket Association in 1946. In the 90 years previous to that, in the many forms the Kiama Cricket Club has taken since the 1850’s, there were countless others who have had their name placed on the scoresheet as having participated in a match for the Club. Even if this anthology became a fifty volume history, it would be an incredible task to try and mention all of those players. Given that this is the case, the readership of a history of the Club is going to be necessarily limited, but word of mouth can also be a powerful thing.

So how does one go about it?
There is of course the traditional method, which would be to trace events in chronological order, focusing on the scores and familiar successes and failures of teams and players. If done well, this is certainly not a bad way to do it. It does require an enormous amount of time and a great deal of research of material that in most cases no longer exists. It also relies on the interest of the reader on events that happened 40 or 60 or 100 years ago. Most of the readers of a ‘history’ of a Club will show more interest on the history of the era in which they played themselves, which would restrict the majority of readership to the most recent thirty years. This is all and good, but you don’t want to ignore one era and be proliferating from another.

In the long run, to do a history properly, it has to be informative. It has to be interesting to people from a multitude of eras. It has to be inspiring. It will hopefully be sprinkled with humour and humorous events. Finally, it has to be relevant. It has to not only be all of these things to people within and around the Kiama Cricket Club, but hopefully it has to be the same to cricket lovers everywhere. The stories and events should be able to be enjoyed by those who have never had an association with the Club, to be presented in a way that it can hold its own whether the people involved are known by the reader or not.

So this is my attempt to bring to life the history of the Kiama Cricket Club. You could call it an irreverent history, one that may not seem to have any rhyme or reason to it, until you start to become intrigued by it.
Some of the events described herein I have witnessed firsthand. Some of the events I have heard second hand. Some of the stories are described through my eyes, others will come to you through the voices of others. Many of these stories and moments I have researched thoroughly, through scorebooks and written accounts and newspaper articles, as well as interviews or just chats over a beer or five. Some of these stories I have just enough information so that I can paint a picture that may not be completely as events unfolded, but it is how I imagine that it could have happened. Some of what you will read in the following articles is as I have imagined it, that I have dreamed I was there to see it. In these cases I have not tried to create a fiction of an account, but merely have attempted to bring to life the atmosphere of the moment, and try to recapture what may have occurred at that time.

What I have tried to do is bring together a mix of characters and events. It will cover the great moments of the Club’s history. It will profile some of the very best players. It will highlight some people and events that have been lost in time. It will hopefully bring together moments and incidents that few people knew at the time they happened, but can now take their rightful place within the history of our Club.

It’s not just a history of the Club. I guess in a way it’s my story of the Kiama Cricket Club as well, and that will likely become obvious through the pages to come. It’s not an attempt at a dry historic record. It is a selection of tales – both mine and others – put together in an entertaining format that is hopefully also informative and interesting. It is my hope that those who read it will find enough here to enjoy, and that you can envelope yourself in the joy that is the game of cricket.

1874/75 Match 11 - 25/5/1875 : Kiama Alberts C.C vs Shellharbour Alberts C.C

Report

A cricket match was played on Queen's Birthday between the Kiama and Shellharbour Albert Clubs, on the Field of Mars, adjacent to the scene of the daring martial exploits of the Kiama and Jamberoo red coats. The Shellharbour side having won the toss, sent their opponents to the wickets, when they made 43 runs. Deane and Craig bowled very well through the innings, considering the nature of the ground, which was very bumpy, and most annoying to both bowlers and batsmen. The Shellharbour team scored only 27, Craig contributing 12 by very good play. After luncheon, the Kiama team again went to the wickets, but did not reach their former score, making out 37. Nicholson and Spinks played well, each making a good stand, the former scoring 13. When the Shellharbour team again went in it was 4.30; and, as it had been arranged to draw the stumps at 5.15 if the game was not finished, there was only an hour left, with 54 runs to get the win. They were determined to make an effort to win, and Craig (captain) and Deane, who went to the wickets together, made a splendid stand, giving the field plenty of leather hunting, and repeatedly stealing runs for tips between the wickets. It seemed as if the game would be won without the loss of a wicket, the score having reached 44 when Deane was unfortunately run out, with 14 runs to his name, 4 of which were made by a fine hit to leg. The next two men went out in rapid succession; and Fitzgerald who next appeared, and Craig soon brought up the score to the number required, viz, 54, the latter carrying his bat out for 25 obtained by really creditable play. The Shellharbour team thus won with 7 wickets to spare.

1874/75 Match 10 - 24/5/1875 : Kiama Alberts C.C vs Ulladulla C.C

Report

The match with Ulladulla allowed our men to retrieve to some extent their good reputation as cricketers, winning the match with tolerable ease, though the Ulladulla players are by no means the least in qualities among the coast clubs. Kiama in one innings scored 78, A.Gordon counting 16, W.C. King 18 and Jas. Spinks 16. Ulladulla first innings 23, second 45. John Spinks did great execution with his bowling getting 9 wickets in the first innings and 5 in the second.

Report

A team of the Kiama Alberts went to Shoalhaven to play two matches - one against the Shoalhaven United Club, and the other against the Ulladulla Club. The first was played on Saturday, and resulted in a victory by Shoalhaven by 18 runs, the match being decided by the first innings, as there was not enough time to play it out. The scoring of the teams is as follows - Kiama first innings 48, second 68 for 9 wickets; Shoalhaven (only one innings) 61. The fielding for Kiama was solid; whilst that of their opponents was moderately creditable, as was also their bowling and batting.

1874/75 Match 8 - 8/5/1875 : Kiama Alberts C.C vs Shellharbour Alberts C.C

Report

A Match was played on the Point, on Saturday last, between the Shellharbour Albert Cricket Club and the second eleven of the Kiama Albert Cricket Club. Play began about noon, H. Williams and M. Eneroe going to the wickets on behalf of Shellharbour, to the bowling of H. King and W. Reid. 28 runs was the total of the innings, Newton making 13 by good play. Kiama followed them, and in consequence of the indifferent bowling of their opponents, succeeded in putting together 106 runs. W. Reid contributed 28, G. Fuller 18, H. King 16 and C. Nicholson 14. Shellharbour in their second attempt, made 59, of which H. Williams made 38 by good free hitting. Kiama thus won in one innings by 19 runs. Messrs J. King and J. McCaffrey were the umpires.

1874/75 Match 7 - 1/5/1875 : Kiama United C.C vs Illawarra C.C

Report

Kiama United Cricket Club v Illawarra Cricket Club - This match, referred to in former issues, was destined, it appears, not to come off. Pluvius is by no means kind to our local cricketers; but seems to cherish ill will to an inordinate degree towards the Wollongong players when they visit Kiama, which they have done now four or five times consecutively with a similar reception to that accorded them on Saturday last. In the morning there seemed no chance for the game to be even commenced; but an attempt was made at 12.30, when there was a break in the weather, and it held up while one innings was played by each side. The ground was too soft to warrant the expectation of long scores; but, not withstanding this, the Kiama team, who went first to the wickets, managed to make a total of 52 - some excellent batting being displayed by Gordon, Williams and McCaffrey, the second of whom was unfortunately run out after making 18, in trying to force a quartette for a nice hit to leg. The Illawarra team in their innings made 51, only a "single" less than their predecessors at the wickets; so that the game was rendered very exciting at the close. Nine wickets had fallen for 49 runs, leaving, when the last man made his appearance, 4 runs to get to win. The bowlers and fieldsmen put forth every effort to gain the game: and were considerably agitated in their neural chords when three singles had been made by Humphries; but the last ball by R King gave them great relief, taking the middle stump; and the match was thus won for Kiama by 1 run. James Richards was highest scorer with 13; Rathmell, who made a fine straight hit for 6, was second, with 10. It is a pity that the pleasure of the game was marred by a rather disagreeable contretemps; but it is to be hoped that the like will never occur in any future engagements.

1874/75 Match 6 - 13/3/1875 : Kiama Alberts C.C vs Kiama United C.C.

Report

The final match of the series for this season between the two local clubs commenced, under very unfavourable circumstances as to weather, on Saturday last - only one innings for each side being completed. The Alberts, having won the toss, went in first, at about 12 o'clock; and played a very long innings, making a total score of 76 - R.King contributing 17, Richardson 13 and M.Crowley 11. Without any loss of time their competitors succeeded them at the wickets, and played even a longer innings than the Alberts. The end of the day's play was another illustration of the remarkable and exciting character of these matches, both teams making exactly equal scores. With nine wickets down there was only one run to get to make the 76. The cry went round, "Another tie!" and sure enough the required unit was added by Major Black (who and his mate were playing in the place of absent members of the selected team). The change of ends was fatal to the Major's colleague, the next ball flooring his wicket - the breathless silence being broken by cheers, screams and other noises. C.McCaffrey was top scorer, seeing 5 others out, and losing his wicket after all by an unfortunate cannon off the ribs: James Spinks made also a good innings for 18 and Osbourne, noted for good hitting power, made 11. Owing to the bad weather, the fielding was anything but first-class. The best average for bowling was obtained by Crowley, who bowled 102 for 27 runs, 2 M.O. and 4 wkts. When the series is finished, a resume of the scores shall be given.
Kiama Independent and Shoalhaven Advertiser. Thursday 18 March, 1875

The finale of the series of matches between the two local clubs, the United and the Albert, came off last Saturday. The first innings of the match had been played on the 12th March, the scores then made being equal, 76; so that on Saturday last only half a day was required to complete the game, play being commenced at about 1 o'clock. The Albert team went first to the wickets, and opened the game tolerably well: up to the fall of the fourth wicket they had an average of five runs per wicket; but the remaining 7 men only added 12 runs to the score - total 32. The United team went to the wickets apparently under the impression that they had matters all their own way. When, however, No. 1 and No. 2 retired for nil, matters looked rather blue for them. The third man, J. Taylor, made an improvement, and put up 9 when his career was cut short by White catching him at long field-off. No. 4 had retired for nothing; and No. 5 for 4 runs - the game standing then at five wickets for 17. Between the next two men only 3 runs were added. The Alberts were now in high spirits. But No. 8 A. Gordon, was a terror to them: the first two hits he made added 10 to the score; two doubles and two singles rapidly succeeded off the same bat, 16 in all, when the game was won, leaving 3 wickets to spare. The two new bats, for which the matches were played, were therefore won by the United team. The inferior play shown in this match may be accounted for by deadness of the ground, caused by the previous heavy rains. At the conclusion friendly cheers were interchanged by the two teams.

1874/75 Match 5 - 20/2/1875 : Kiama Alberts C.C vs Kiama United C.C.

Report

The third of the series of matches between the two local clubs - United and Albert - came off under very favourable circumstances, for this season of the year, on Saturday last. A great deal of interest was manifested in the game; and it turned out an excellent and closely contested one, like the two preceding matches. In fact, they have been up to the present the most exciting contests ever fought on Kiama soil by men of the willow, and are even unusually remarkable in the history of the noble sport. The first ended in a tie; the second with only 4 runs in favour of the Alberts; and that on Saturday was, as will be seen, quite as exciting a contest.
The game commenced at about 11 o'clock, the Alberts first going to the wickets. They did not make a good beginning, the first three men being disposed of by Gordon for a half-dozen runs. The "royal" cricketers, however, when they made their appearance, effected a change for the better - the quartette of Kings putting together 35 runs, W. C. K. being the highest scorer with 14. The remaining three men made but 7 runs, of which Chapman got 6. This gave a total off the bat of 46; and Mr Sundries gave them only 4 extras - 50 in all. The bowling and fielding was very good. The score was regarded as anything but large by the Uniteds; but, to the credit of their opponents be it said, they failed to reach it. The Uniteds played a very careful innings. C. McCaffrey and Christie opening well for their colleagues; and the latter made a very log stand, seeing five others out for the handsome score of 3 singles! He created considerable fun for the spectators by the comical manner in which he dodged the field, who made every endeavour to catch him; but they couldn't do it, though R.King at last discovered the secret and rattled his timbers. The innings terminated for 42 off the bat and 7 sundries - 49 in all, one run less than the Albert team - the top scorer being C.McCaffrey with 12. The bowling of R.King and T.Crowley was very good, the former taking 6 wickets out of 9 bowled. In the second innings on both sides the play was still good. The Alberts put together 59 runs in all, R.King at the top with 17 - making a grand total for them of 109. The Uniteds made a bad beginning, but a good finish. When six wickets were down they had over 30 to get: but Gordon (14), Jas. Spinks (8) and Williams (8) ran up the score - Osbourne, when only one run was wanted to make the tie, winning the match for the Uniteds with a splendid hit to leg for 4; total 63 or for the two innings 112. Though the match ended with two wickets to spare the differences in runs, had it been played through, would doubtless have been very trifling. Master G. Fuller, in the last innings, made a splendid catch at long-field-off, for which he was greatly cheered.

The United team played in mourning for their late invaluable and worthy colleague, Mr. S. Gordon, whose good humour and manly conduct they are not likely soon to forget. Mr G. L. Fuller, the president of the club, very kindly provided the sashes and rosettes for this purpose.

1874/75 Match 4 - 26/1/1875 : Kiama Alberts C.C. vs Ulladulla C.C

Report

The Kiama Alberts met the Ulladulla cricketers on Anniversary Day at Shoalhaven. The match resulted in a victory for Kiama by seven runs. The Kiama men, who went first to the wickets, made in their first innings 38 runs. Ulladulla followed and were disposed of for 16. Kiama in the second innings made 27, leaving their opponents 50 to get to win. Up to the last moment the result was doubtful, as the Ulladulla men batted much better than in their first attempt; but the last wicket fell when the score had reached 42, thus leaving them 7 runs behind Kiama. The fielding was on the whole good. The bowling of R.King, C.McCaffrey and John Spinks for Kiama was, as usual, very good; and for Ulladulla, Warden and McMahon were well on the wicket. Mr. G. L. Fuller acted as umpire for Kiama, and Mr Henry Millard for Ulladulla. The best of good feeling prevailed throughout the game, which was witnessed by some two hundred spectators of which the fair sex showed a good part. Comment was made upon the appearance of the Kiama team with their mourning sashes on, and when it was made known that such was in respectful and fond memory of a brother cricketer, the late Mr. Samuel Gordon, general feeling ran high in favour of the unanimity shown by them.

Obituary - Samuel Gordon - 10/1/1875

OBITUARY

The sympathies and regrets of the district have been excited within the last few days in perhaps a somewhat unusual degree by the death of Samuel Gordon, third son of Mr. William Gordon of Saddleback. The deceased was a young man of 30 years of age, of steady and irreproachable character, and distinguished in the pursuits specially cultivated by young men in British communities. He was an efficient member of the Kiama Volunteer Corps, and an honorary member of that of Jamberoo. He was one of the prime marksmen of the district, and not less favourably known in the cricket field. He was, moreover, a native of the district of Kiama, where his estimation in short was all that could be desired for a young man of his age and circumstances. The illness which terminated in his death on Sunday afternoon last was, we believe, of a somewhat complicated character, the symptoms of rheumatic fever being the most prominent, and traceable, it is said, to his having on Christmas Day, while driving towards Wollongong, been occidentally upset in a creek on the road, and continued his journey in wet clothes. The death, when it actually occurred, was nevertheless unexpected, at least till within a very short time; for, only a day or two previously, we understand, his friends believed him to be rapidly recovering. The funeral took place on Tuesday last, when Mr. Gordon's remains were followed to the grave in the Presbyterian burial ground, Jamberoo, by an unusually large number of friends, neighbours and residents of the district in general, many of whom would doubtless recollect that a few years since an elder brother of the deceased died from the same or similar causes. A detachment of the Kiama volunteers, between thirty and forth in number, we believe, was also present; and fired the usual number of vollies over the grave.

CRICKET MEETING

We have been requested to draw attention to the advertisement calling a meeting of the Kiama United Club for tomorrow (Friday) evening. It is called principally, we believe, in order to consider how the club shall show some appropriate mark of respect to the late Mr. S. Gordon.

1874/75 Match 3 - 5/12/1874 : Kiama United C.C. vs Kiama Alberts C.C

Report

The series of matches between the two Kiama clubs commenced on Saturday last, when a most creditable game was played - creditable alike to both sides. Everything being in readiness, the contest began at a little before 11 o'clock, which allowed time for it to be fought out. The United team went first to the wickets, and ran up a score of 76, - S. Gordon contributing 27, John Spinks 17, and Christie 11: and the Alberts in their first innings secured 70, 6 short of their opponents - R. King making the handsome score of 45, E. Maher 11. After lunch, and without loss of time, the United commenced their second innings, and were not quite as successful as in their first - they put up a total score of 54, - John Spinks making 13: thus leaving their opponents 61 runs to get to win. The early part of the Alberts' second innings bespoke an easy victory for the opposite team; but by the good batting of Nicholson the game was made at its close a most exciting one. When the last man went in there were only a few runs to get; and as each unit was added to the score, the cheers of the spectators, who generally sympathised with the Alberts, rang through the air. Nicholson and Howell made the scores a tie amid enthusiastic cheers. The ball was then given to Nicholson, when he gave a clean hit for 3 to field-on. The cheers were deafening from the crowd; but it would be impossible to describe the chagrin of the disappointed ones on seeing the ball fall into the hands of Osbourne, planted just in the right place, - and thus the game ended in a tie, a remarkable event in the history of cricket. The bowling and fielding on both sides showed a great improvement on former matches; and A. Gordon deserves special commendation for his handling of the ball at the wicket. Messrs. G. L. Fuller and G. Chapman acted as umpires, whose decisions gave the utmost satisfaction.

1874/75 Match 2 - 24/10/1874 : Kiama Alberts C.C vs Kiama United C.C.

Report

A match is to be played on Saturday next, on the Church Point, between the Kiama United and the Kiama Alberts Clubs, for a new ball, play to commence at 11 o'clock; and it is intended to select the players for the Sydney match that afternoon. The following is the United team:- Messrs. C and J. McCaffrey, James and John Spinks, S. and A. Gordon, A. Osbourne, W. C. King, J. Hincks, F. Pinkstone and W. Christie, - D. King being the twelfth man; umpire, G. L. Fuller, Esq.
Kiama Independent and Shoalhaven Advertiser. Thursday 22 October, 1874

The match intimated in our last, between the United and Albert Clubs of Kiama, to take place on Saturday came off accordingly. The game commenced sometime after 11 'clock, it being a mutual understanding that it was to be decided by the first innings, if there was not time to play it out. In the first innings the Alberts (who opened the game at the wickets) had but a short life, obtaining only 43 runs; while their opponents put up a score of 77. The second innings of the Albert team was much more credible to them; when the stumps were drawn, after five o'clock (and the weather being very unfavourable), there were only 8 wickets down for the handsome score of 121 - R.King carrying his bat out with 70 runs to his name, obtained by most creditable batting. The match was for a ball; and an objection was raised to the Uniteds claiming it: but, in all fairness, they were entitled to it, on the understanding that it was to be a one-day's match, and they did quite right to press their claim. The analysis of the bowling show for both sides anything but a creditable result:- that of the Uniteds for the first innings gives rather more than 3 balls for every run obtained off the bat, but for the second innings more than 1 run for every 2 balls; the Alberts' analysis shows a unit under 1 run for every 2 balls. A. Gordon's bowling, taken by itself, shows an exceptionally good result; it will be seen below that he must have delivered at least 106 balls without giving a run.

A team of the United Club are to proceed to Sydney to play a match on the 9th proximo with the East Sydney Club. Arrangements have been made with the Steam Company for passages on the same terms as the volunteers, viz, half fares: and we may inform the men that they are invited to a dinner at the Oxford Hotel after the match. The team consists of the following members:- Messrs. C. and J. McCaffrey, A. and S. Gordon, R., W. C. and D. King, James and John Spinks, A. Osbourne, W. Christie, S. Richardson and (as umpire) G. L. Fuller.

1874/75 Match 1 - 17/10/1874 : Shellharbour Alberts C.C vs Kiama Alberts C.C.

Report

The match between the Kiama Albert and Shellharbour Albert Clubs came off on Saturday last at Shellharbour. Shortly after 12 o'clock the Shellharbour team having won the toss sent their opponents to the wickets. Messrs. Williams, Allen, Deane and Hughes bowled during the innings, which was protracted to an unusual length by the steady play of several of the Kiama men, notably Marks and Howell. At 2 o'clock the players adjourned to a luncheon, which was hospitably provided by the Shellharbour Alberts at Conghran's Hotel. Soon after resuming play the innings terminated for a total of 80 runs. The Shellharbour men, who without loss of time took the wickets, were disposed of for 31, chiefly owing to the excellent bowling of R.King. The second innings for Kiama brought up their total to 131. At a late hour the Shellharbour team went in the second time, with 101 runs to get to win; but when the stumps were drawn 5 of their best batsmen were out for 12 runs. The match was thus decided by the first innings, and Kiama won the ball.

Kiama United Cricket Club - Annual General Meeting - 1874

KIAMA UNITED CRICKET CLUB - The second annual meeting of this club was held in the (late) Post Office on Friday night last, when there was a tolerable attendance of members, and business was entered upon in preparation for the coming season with laudable spirit - G.L. Fuller, Esq, J.P. presiding. The secretary read a resume of the work of the club for the year 1873-4. It showed the club had engaged in eight public matches, in six of which they had been the victors and in two the vanquished; congratulated the club upon its activity and success, and upon having been the first to invite a metropolitan team to the district; and expressed a hope that the coming season might be even a more animated one. Mr R.King received special praise for the excellent batting he had displayed during the season; he had played seven matches, his scores being respectively 16, 14, 44, 29, 26, 40, 21 - in all 190. Prize bats had been won by Mr. R.King and Mr. S.Gordon; and though an analysis had not been kept of the bowling, Messrs. C. McCaffrey and John Spinks deserved honourable mention for their performances in the branch. The financial report of the treasurer showed that contributions had been received to the amount of £11 16s, in addition to which there had been presentations to the club by Mr. W. D. Meares of a bat, and Mr. Joseph Redford, of a set of stumps; and six balls had been won by the club. The expenditure had amounted to £11 12s, 3d, leaving a small balance to credit. After adopting the above reports, the meeting proceeded with the election of office bearers for the year 1874-5, which resulted as follows - president, G. L. Fuller, Esq, J.P.; vice-president A. Osbourne, Esq., J.P.; hon treasurer, Mr. Samuel Gordon; hon. secretary, Mr Fred Pinkstone; managing committee, Messrs James marks, C and J. McCaffrey, James Spinks, R.King, J.Hincks, H.Pike and S.Richardson. It was then resolved that the highest aggregate scorer in the ensuing season should be presented with a prize bat bearing a suitable inscription; the secretary was directed to communicate with the Shoalhaven United and East Sydney clubs with a view to arrange matches; and other routine business done, when the meeting terminated, - practice being appointed for Saturday afternoon next.
