The third of the series of matches between the two local clubs - United and Albert - came off under very favourable circumstances, for this season of the year, on Saturday last. A great deal of interest was manifested in the game; and it turned out an excellent and closely contested one, like the two preceding matches. In fact, they have been up to the present the most exciting contests ever fought on Kiama soil by men of the willow, and are even unusually remarkable in the history of the noble sport. The first ended in a tie; the second with only 4 runs in favour of the Alberts; and that on Saturday was, as will be seen, quite as exciting a contest.
The game commenced at about 11 o'clock, the Alberts first going to the wickets. They did not make a good beginning, the first three men being disposed of by Gordon for a half-dozen runs. The "royal" cricketers, however, when they made their appearance, effected a change for the better - the quartette of Kings putting together 35 runs, W. C. K. being the highest scorer with 14. The remaining three men made but 7 runs, of which Chapman got 6. This gave a total off the bat of 46; and Mr Sundries gave them only 4 extras - 50 in all. The bowling and fielding was very good. The score was regarded as anything but large by the Uniteds; but, to the credit of their opponents be it said, they failed to reach it. The Uniteds played a very careful innings. C. McCaffrey and Christie opening well for their colleagues; and the latter made a very log stand, seeing five others out for the handsome score of 3 singles! He created considerable fun for the spectators by the comical manner in which he dodged the field, who made every endeavour to catch him; but they couldn't do it, though R.King at last discovered the secret and rattled his timbers. The innings terminated for 42 off the bat and 7 sundries - 49 in all, one run less than the Albert team - the top scorer being C.McCaffrey with 12. The bowling of R.King and T.Crowley was very good, the former taking 6 wickets out of 9 bowled. In the second innings on both sides the play was still good. The Alberts put together 59 runs in all, R.King at the top with 17 - making a grand total for them of 109. The Uniteds made a bad beginning, but a good finish. When six wickets were down they had over 30 to get: but Gordon (14), Jas. Spinks (8) and Williams (8) ran up the score - Osbourne, when only one run was wanted to make the tie, winning the match for the Uniteds with a splendid hit to leg for 4; total 63 or for the two innings 112. Though the match ended with two wickets to spare the differences in runs, had it been played through, would doubtless have been very trifling. Master G. Fuller, in the last innings, made a splendid catch at long-field-off, for which he was greatly cheered.
The United team played in mourning for their late invaluable and worthy colleague, Mr. S. Gordon, whose good humour and manly conduct they are not likely soon to forget. Mr G. L. Fuller, the president of the club, very kindly provided the sashes and rosettes for this purpose.
