1868/69 Match 2 - 15/5/1869 : Australian Club (Kiama) vs Dapto

Report

AUSTRALIAN C.C. V DAPTO C.C.
The newly inaugurated cricket club, representing Kiama, and bearing the appellation of the "Australian" met, as a first contest, the Dapto team on Saturday last. The match it appears was very abruptly arranged. The Dapto representatives had challenged Kiama some weeks previously, on condition that the match should be played in Shellharbour; but the latter declined to accept the challenge on these terms - promising to play on their own ground should they come, and to return a match in Dapto on a subsequent occasion. No further communication being received by the secretary of the Australian club, all hopes of a match were abandoned; and the only notice of the intention of the Dapto men to follow their challenge into Kiama was their appearance on the cricket ground on Saturday morning, at about eleven o'clock. However, the secretary soon gathered an eleven to meet them, and the match commenced at about noon - it being arranged that it should be decided in one innings. The weather had been very unfavourable during the morning, but had by this time cleared up, although the ground was very slippery. The match was a very tame one, and resulted in a victory for Kiama by hirteen runs and seven wickets to spare.
The Dapto representatives went to the wickets first, and in a very short time J.Williams took W.Moon's wicket, and he retired without making any score. G.Thompson, at the other wicket, was then joined by J.Quinn (who appeared to be the best batsman of the team). He held his ground for awhile, but his stumps were taken by Williams, after scoring four singles. W.Abbott followed, and both he and Quinn appeared to play very cautiously. The former eventually managed to get two very nice cuts, and, what is termed in Kiama cricketing phraseology, a "rocker", a hit for four - the only one put into the field throughout the innings. The bowling was here changed, when Abbott' wicket was taken by a remarkably well-directed ball by W.C. King. There were three wickets down at this time for fourteen runs; and the remaining six fell only adding a hit for a double score, which was made by G. Gordon. J. Quinn held his ground while seven wickets were taken, but scored very slowly. The fielding of the Kiama players was excellent throughout, with the exception of the backstop, as it will be seen by the score that a large number of byes was obtained.

The innings of the Kiama team was played very quickly. A. McAndrews, James King, and R. King retired, having only scored one run. Messrs. T. and W.C. King were then sent to the wickets, and finished the game, scoring fifty-one runs and carrying their bats out.
