1874/75 Match 11 - 25/5/1875 : Kiama Alberts C.C vs Shellharbour Alberts C.C

A cricket match was played on Queen's Birthday between the Kiama and Shellharbour Albert Clubs, on the Field of Mars, adjacent to the scene of the daring martial exploits of the Kiama and Jamberoo red coats. The Shellharbour side having won the toss, sent their opponents to the wickets, when they made 43 runs. Deane and Craig bowled very well through the innings, considering the nature of the ground, which was very bumpy, and most annoying to both bowlers and batsmen. The Shellharbour team scored only 27, Craig contributing 12 by very good play. After luncheon, the Kiama team again went to the wickets, but did not reach their former score, making out 37. Nicholson and Spinks played well, each making a good stand, the former scoring 13. When the Shellharbour team again went in it was 4.30; and, as it had been arranged to draw the stumps at 5.15 if the game was not finished, there was only an hour left, with 54 runs to get the win. They were determined to make an effort to win, and Craig (captain) and Deane, who went to the wickets together, made a splendid stand, giving the field plenty of leather hunting, and repeatedly stealing runs for tips between the wickets. It seemed as if the game would be won without the loss of a wicket, the score having reached 44 when Deane was unfortunately run out, with 14 runs to his name, 4 of which were made by a fine hit to leg. The next two men went out in rapid succession; and Fitzgerald who next appeared, and Craig soon brought up the score to the number required, viz, 54, the latter carrying his bat out for 25 obtained by really creditable play. The Shellharbour team thus won with 7 wickets to spare.
