The return match, as intimated in a previous issue of the Independent came off on Wednesday, the 31st ultimate. A close contest was expected by many, and some of the Kiama men imagined they would have been beaten by their opponents, but the result was, as will be seen by the score, an entirely one-sided game in favour of the Kiama eleven. Some allowance must be made, however, for our best players being prevented from coming to Kiama, also the hardness of the ground interfered with their round arm bowling. The batting and fielding with one or two exceptions of the Kiama men was excellent, and the bowling of Gordon and Williams very destructive. On the other side the batting of T. Campbell and the bowling of John Hughes was splendid. The Kiama men went first to the wickets, and retired with a score of 92. The Shellharbour and Albion Park men then went to the wickets, and only succeeded in scoring 48 runs, being little more than half the number scored by the Kiama eleven. At this stage the players partook of an excellent lunch, provided on the ground by Mr Evans of the Beehive Inn. At the conclusion of this very refreshing diversion, the Shellharbour and Albion Park determined to follow their innings. They retired the second time with a score of 36. The sum total of both innings amounted to 84, leaving them behind their opponents by 8 runs.
Although the game was void of that interest and excitement which always marks a close contest, yet all seemed to be well satisfied with the day’s pleasure, and at the close repaired to Mr Evans’, where an excellent dinner was provided, one not only pleasing to the sense of taste but also the eye, being tastefully decorated with the beauties of Flora’s domain. After ample justice had been done to the good things prepared by Mr Evans, and the appearance of the tables undergone a slight alteration, several toasts were proposed and suitably responded to. The “Shellharbour and Albion Park” was responded to by Mr H Uther on behalf of that eleven. The “Kiama Eleven” was proposed, and was briefly responded to by Mr Thomas King. The “Umpires”, “Scorers”, “Captains”, “Host and Hostess”, and last not least the “Ladies” were severally proposed and responded to. At an early hour the meeting broke up, our friends from the distance being anxious to get home.
