1872/73 Match 2 - 29/3/1873 : Toolijooa C.C. vs Kiama United C.C

Report

The return match betwen the Kiama United and Toolijooa Clubs came off at Toolijooa on Saturday last. The weather was favourable, though "old Sol" shone out with rather more force than could be desired by cricketers, especially when shut in a damp swamp surrounded so closely by majestic oaks as to prevent the ingress of fresh air. It had been stipulated by the Toolijooa Club that the game should commence at 9.30'clock a.m., and the Kiama representatives were on the ground punctually at the appointed time; but unfortunately their opponents did not put in an appearance till an hour and a half after that time - the wickets being pitched at about 11 o'clock; and it had also been previously agreed that the match (which was played for a ball) if not completed in the one day, should be decided by the first innings; the stumps to be drawn at 6pm. Under those circumstances, the team that went first to the wickets had a decided advantage as their opponents would not have time to play a second innings, and when a game of cricket becomes exciting, the field is always the best position. Fortune smiled on the Toolijooans, for they gained the toss, and very sensibly went first to the wickets. The bowling on the Kiama side was taken by Messrs. C.McCaffrey and James Spinks, who laboured under the disadvantage of a wet ball; and throughout the innings a considerable number of wides were given. The play was very slow, and the innings was spun out for two hours, at the close of which the Toolijooa men had put up a score of 48 off the bat, 13 wides, 8 byes and leg byes - total 69. The bowling of the Kiama men, with the exception of the wides, was very creditable. About 30 overs were bowled in the innings, of which C.McCaffrey bowled 10 maidens, and very few runs were got off him.He got three wickets, and caught one off his own bowling. James Spinks was relieved by his brother, and McMahon and Campbell got a wicket each.

It was after 1 o'clock when the Kiama men commenced their innngs which, with an interval of half-an-hour for lunch, lasted until about 4 o'clock. The bowlers against them were J.Robson, who was even in better trim than usual, and J.B. Mills of Broughton Creek, a terrific round-arm bowler, and very true, who proved a valuable acquisition to the Toolijooa team. T.Lees also bowled two or three overs. The batting of the Kiama men was very creditable to them, especially that by C.McCaffrey and James Spinks. These two men played together for nearly an hour, the bowling being too good to score from; but they parted company at last through a splendid catch made by Robson at mid-wicket on, and C.McCaffrey retired with a dozen runs to his name. Spinks held his ground while three others retired, and was pulling up the score gradually, when, by a balk-run, he was stumped, and the innings closed, with a score of 37 off the bat, 3 wides and 13 byes - total 53 - 16 behind their opponents.

The second innings on either side may be very briefly described. The Toolijooans evidently went in determined to make a heavy score, for they "slogged" mercilessly; but they were disappointed by the result. The whole innings was played out in an hour. C.McCaffrey and McMahon sustained the bowling admirably, that the former being very fast and straight. The total score made off the bat was 39, and only 3 wides were given, making in all 42. The captain of the Kiama team without much delay sent C.McCaffrey and Gordon to the wickets, who had only about five minutes play.

We give below the detailed scores; and though the Kiama men lost the ball, and impartial critic would hardly affirm that they came home defeated.
