A very agreeable, yet disagreeable match was played on the point on Saturday last, according to previous intimation, between eleven of the Illawarra C. C. and a similar number of the Kiama United C. C. The game was played throughout with the utmost harmony, with an entire absence of those petty disputes which too often mar the pleasure which ought ever to prevail in the cricket field. The boisterous weather of Saturday, however, proved a great drawback to the interest of the game.
Wickets were pitched by the umpires shortly after the appointed time. 10 o'clock, and the game commenced at about half past 10. The captain of the Kiama team, having won the toss, chose first innings; and C. M'Caffrey and R.King opened the game at the wickets to the bowling of Messrs. J. Hegarty and G. Edwards. During the whole of the innings the Kiama men batted very well indeed. R.King remained at his post about an hour and a half, displaying a very able defence. He ran up the creditable soore of 40, gained by good generalship and hitting. The next best scorer was James Spinks, besides whom S.Gordon and D. King showed pretty good batting. The strong wind, of course, told very much against the bowling, and, in some respects, against the fieldlng, too.The first innings was not completed till after 1 o'clock; when the players, together with the umpires and scorers, adjourned to partake of a very acceptable luncheon prepared by Mr. R.Pickerman, and spread on a sheltered spot over the rocks at the point. No time was lost during the business; and, after the interchange of good wishes, the teams resumed their game.
The innings of the Wollongong men was not a long one ; and, strange to say considering the notoriety of the Messrs. Richards, Hegarty, and Rathmell for their hitting powers, not a double figure was made, There was nothing remarkable in it, except that Rathmell hit two very tall and straight "skyers" the first of which was missed, but the second fell into the hands of James Spinks. The bowling was pretty good, all things considered.
The second Innings of both teams may be briefly described. That of Kiama was a short one. R. King made a fine hit to leg off the first ball pitched to him ; but was splendidly caught by A. Richards, who grabbed it with his right hand just as the ball was passing over the parsonage fence, and he was deservedly applauded for it. The total score of the innings was 88, not half of what was made in the first Innings. W. Christie was doing very well ; but his life was cut short by the umpire giving him out "leg before wicket", which we think, in this instance, was rather a fine judgement. The spectators said it served him right ; he would put his legs before the wicket. But it ought to be borne in mind that if the ball is pitched outside a certain line, a batsman is permitted by the laws of cricket to defend the wicket w!th half-a-dozen legs if he had them.
The Wollongong men went again to the wickets, and five of them (two not out) ran up a score of 39 by six o'clock, when the stumps were drawn, according to agreement. We have no doubt the remaining men would have made the number to win, had they had time. The game was decided by the first innings, and Kiama got the ball. The prize bat was, of course, taken by R. King, who richly deserved it.
