1874/75 Match 6 - 13/3/1875 : Kiama Alberts C.C vs Kiama United C.C.

Report

The final match of the series for this season between the two local clubs commenced, under very unfavourable circumstances as to weather, on Saturday last - only one innings for each side being completed. The Alberts, having won the toss, went in first, at about 12 o'clock; and played a very long innings, making a total score of 76 - R.King contributing 17, Richardson 13 and M.Crowley 11. Without any loss of time their competitors succeeded them at the wickets, and played even a longer innings than the Alberts. The end of the day's play was another illustration of the remarkable and exciting character of these matches, both teams making exactly equal scores. With nine wickets down there was only one run to get to make the 76. The cry went round, "Another tie!" and sure enough the required unit was added by Major Black (who and his mate were playing in the place of absent members of the selected team). The change of ends was fatal to the Major's colleague, the next ball flooring his wicket - the breathless silence being broken by cheers, screams and other noises. C.McCaffrey was top scorer, seeing 5 others out, and losing his wicket after all by an unfortunate cannon off the ribs: James Spinks made also a good innings for 18 and Osbourne, noted for good hitting power, made 11. Owing to the bad weather, the fielding was anything but first-class. The best average for bowling was obtained by Crowley, who bowled 102 for 27 runs, 2 M.O. and 4 wkts. When the series is finished, a resume of the scores shall be given.

The finale of the series of matches between the two local clubs, the United and the Albert, came off last Saturday. The first innings of the match had been played on the 12th March, the scores then made being equal, 76; so that on Saturday last only half a day was required to complete the game, play being commenced at about 1 o'clock. The Albert team went first to the wickets, and opened the game tolerably well: up to the fall of the fourth wicket they had an average of five runs per wicket; but the remaining 7 men only added 12 runs to the score - total 32. The United team went to the wickets apparently under the impression that they had matters all their own way. When, however, No. 1 and No. 2 retired for nil, matters looked rather blue for them. The third man, J. Taylor, made an improvement, and put up 9 when his career was cut short by White catching him at long field-off. No. 4 had retired for nothing; and No. 5 for 4 runs - the game standing then at five wickets for 17. Between the next two men only 3 runs were added. The Alberts were now in high spirits. But No. 8 A. Gordon, was a terror to them: the first two hits he made added 10 to the score; two doubles and two singles rapidly succeeded off the same bat, 16 in all, when the game was won, leaving 3 wickets to spare. The two new bats, for which the matches were played, were therefore won by the United team. The inferior play shown in this match may be accounted for by deadness of the ground, caused by the previous heavy rains. At the conclusion friendly cheers were interchanged by the two teams.
