1874/75 Match 7 - 1/5/1875 : Kiama United C.C vs Illawarra C.C

Report

Kiama United Cricket Club v Illawarra Cricket Club - This match, referred to in former issues, was destined, it appears, not to come off. Pluvius is by no means kind to our local cricketers; but seems to cherish ill will to an inordinate degree towards the Wollongong players when they visit Kiama, which they have done now four or five times consecutively with a similar reception to that accorded them on Saturday last. In the morning there seemed no chance for the game to be even commenced; but an attempt was made at 12.30, when there was a break in the weather, and it held up while one innings was played by each side. The ground was too soft to warrant the expectation of long scores; but, not withstanding this, the Kiama team, who went first to the wickets, managed to make a total of 52 - some excellent batting being displayed by Gordon, Williams and McCaffrey, the second of whom was unfortunately run out after making 18, in trying to force a quartette for a nice hit to leg. The Illawarra team in their innings made 51, only a "single" less than their predecessors at the wickets; so that the game was rendered very exciting at the close. Nine wickets had fallen for 49 runs, leaving, when the last man made his appearance, 4 runs to get to win. The bowlers and fieldsmen put forth every effort to gain the game: and were considerably agitated in their neural chords when three singles had been made by Humphries; but the last ball by R King gave them great relief, taking the middle stump; and the match was thus won for Kiama by 1 run. James Richards was highest scorer with 13; Rathmell, who made a fine straight hit for 6, was second, with 10. It is a pity that the pleasure of the game was marred by a rather disagreeable contretemps; but it is to be hoped that the like will never occur in any future engagements.
