THE SPORTS ON FRIDAY LAST
Last Friday was quite a holiday in Kiama, and the greater portion of our masculine community turned out in Sunday rig to witness or join in the sports, which were got up by a few gentlemen desirous of breaking the monotony of these dull times. The weather was very fine – a beautiful calm day, and though the sun shone pleasantly, it was not so hot as to be uncomfortable for those who had to exert themselves in the cricket field.
It had been arranged that the proceedings of the day should commence with a cricket macth between the married and single players of the district, and if the game was not finished by two o’clock, the stumps were to be drawn and the match decided by the first innings. The match proved a take-in to a great many, for it had been confidently prognosticated that the single men would find it an easy matter to vanquish their opponents; but, as so often happens in such cases, the reverse was the result. As the hour drew near for commencing the play, it was found that many who had been chosen did not put in an appearance, and others were chosen from among those present to fill their places. The toss having been won by the single men, the married players were sent to the wickets.
