START NEW CLUB KIAMA UNITED C.C
CRICKET.-- At a meeting of the members of the new club, held at the Steam Packet Inn, on Saturday night last, it was resolved to commence proceedings by a match to he played on the Point on Saturday next, between two elevens chosen from among its members; and a resolution was carried to challenge the Toolijooa Club to a match to be played in Kiama on the second day of the show.
Kiama Independent and Shoalhaven Advertiser. Thursday 20 February, 1873.
The first match in the history of the Kiama United Cricket Club, recently established, was played on the Point Reserve on Thursday and Friday last. The days were very favourable as regarded weather for outdoor engagements; and a goodly number of spectators assembled to witness the game. The opposite team, selected from the Toolijooa Club, respectable young men, and skilled in the game, were on the ground at an early hour on the morning of Thursday, when the match was commenced by the last named team being sent to the wickets - the Kiama men having won the toss. The batting on their part was, with two or three exceptions, pretty good, and they made a total score off the bat of 62 runs; but the very loose fielding of the Kiama team (owing to their unpractised condition) assisted the scoring to a considerable extent, for their best batsman, Taylor, who made the handsome score of 36, ought to have been caught out with only a few runs to his name; and in the addition to this 24 byes and wides were given - making a total for the first innings of 86.
The batting of the Kiama side in their first innings was anything but creditable - the only one placing a double figure to his name being the old veteran A. Gordon, who seems generally to hav a contempt for mere units. The fielding and bowling of their opponents were too good to allow a large score, and they terminated their innings with only 42 up, one short of half the number of the Toolijooa men. Only six byes and wides were given.
It is the usual practice, when not half the score of the opponents has been made by the team who goes last to the wickets to follow up their innings; but this appears not to have been enforced by the Toolijoos, who again went to the wickets. They commenced their second innings at half past 4pm, resolving to draw stumps at half-past 6; and, to the surprise of everyone, the innings was over before that time, with only 43 runs to their credit. The bowling, fielding and general play of the Kiama men were excellent; and it would be unfair not to mention specially the name of T. Welsh, whose wicket-keeping, for an amateur, proved very credible indeed, and was the admiration of all. He was loudly applauded for his sudden finish of the innings, by stumping the last man. No byes were given, and only five wides. The stumps were then drawn.
The match was resumed on Friday morning, with everything favourable as before. The Kiama team did not make so good a stand as was expected of them. It was the general belief that they would win the match. They went to the wickets with 88 runs to get to score a win. They batted very steadily for some time but when their best man A. Gordon was sent away from the wicket with only a few runs, they seemed to lose courage; and, with the exception of C.McCaffrey, who scored 15, the numbers were not above three to any one man of the remainder. They scored in the innings - off the bat, 16. 15 byes, 3 wides - total 54; leaving the Toolijoo team victors with 38 runs to spare.
