A match between the respective teams of Shoalhaven and Kiama - the first which has taken place between them for many years - was played on Saturday, on the Kiama ground. The weather, being very unfavourable, detracted considerably from the interest in the match; and in the afternoon the men had to play in almost incessant rain. At about ten o'clock the point presented a lively appearance, being pretty well occupied by those engaged in preliminary practice; and half an hour or so having been thus spent, the wickets were pitched by the umpires. Messrs. G.L. Fuller and D. Hyam, and the game commenced, Kiama going to the wickets and the Shoalhaven team, from the gigantic stature of several of their number, making an excellent display in the field. R.King and C.McCaffrey opened the play for Kiama; and H.McKenzie and P.O'Neil were the bowlers throughout the innings - which was rather a disastrous one for our side. Mackenzie delivered a splendid over, in which he floored the two McCaffreys with beautiful bail balls; and R.King lost his wicket shortly after, being taken by a rather silly ball from O'Neil - 3 wickets down for 3 runs. A change for the better was made by their successors, S. Gordon and John Spinks, who between them put up a score of 29, the former, after making 18, committing suicide by placing his leg before the wicket. The remainder of the innings was very poor - the total being 43.
The Shoalhaven team went at once to the wickets, doing a little better than their compeers, but not so well as was expected. Messrs. J. Thurgate and H.Brettell opened the innings, and put up 10 between them. The old veteran, A.Gordon, went, of course, to the top of the tree; besides whom Messrs. Warden, Mackenzie and Bundock played pretty well, scoring 6 apiece:- the total made in the innings being 51, an advantage of 8 runs. The fielding of the Kiama team was very slovenly; but the bowling of Messrs. C.McCaffrey and John Spinks was very effective.
After a good dinner at Mrs Jackson's the game was resumed at about 3 o'clock, when Kiama redeemed her laurels; at sundown, when the stumps were drawn, only two wickets had fallen for 74 runs, - R.King in a two hours innings, making 39, and S. Gordon (top-scorer in the first innings) 21.
The match was decided by the first innings; and the ball was handed to the Shoalhaven team.
