1866/67 Match 5 - 24/5/1867 : Kiama C.C. vs Jerrara

Report

FRIDAY last – being the Queen’s Birthday and general holiday – was chosen by the votaries of the “willow” for the return match between the Britannia and Jerrara Clubs. The day was all that could be desired by cricketers, but a little too cold for lookers-on; yet in spite of this a large number of spectators assembled.
The event came off on the Kiama ground, which was somewhat out of the ordinary course, the first match – in which the Jerrara men were victorious - being played on the same ground, on the 20th April last; but we understand the Jerrara cricketers came a second time to Kiama at the express wish of the Kiama club. Kiama went first to the wickets, scoring in the first innings 37. The bowling of the “old champion” A. Gordon, was as usual first class, but that of his brother Samuel but little worse, no fewer than seven being bowled out by these two – four by A. Gordon and three by S. Gordon. The Jerarra team then took the bat, and scored 73. The bowling of Messrs. John Thomas and Dixon King was good, but not equal to the other side; indeed, it was evident to the most casual observers the Kiama men were over-matched.
After lunch (each party providing their own) the game was resumed, and finished, Jerrara winning with nine wickets to fall.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE KIAMA INDEPENDENT
SIR.-Allow me through the medium of your columns to express my feelings of disappointment and regret at the inhospitable treatment shown by the Kiama cricketers throughout the match which terminated on Friday last, the Queen's Birthday.
The first match of the game was played in Kiama, and we naturally expected that which, as a rule, is invariably given to strangers, "a plain lunch," but no such provision was made, a slight we all felt, and was attributed, by the Kiama men an "oversight." Well, thinking the like would not occur again, and being naturally lovers of peace and good fellowship, we thought nothing more of the matter, determining in our own minds to treat them better at Jerrara on the return match, which was fixed for the Queen's Birthday. At the particular request of the Kiama men, being desirous to oblige them, we left our own ground, and went to play the return match at Kiama, and, of course, were again the strangers. Our disappointment may be conceived when arriving on the ground to find that no provision, in the shape of refreshment, had been made, nor the faintest effort put forth to give us a reception due to the most unpretending team of cricketers. And here I think it but right to mention the courtesy of Mrs. Adams, who seeing our dilemma, generously exerted herself, and in a comparatively short time provided us a good dinner, for which the Jerarra cricketers feel very grateful. In my humble opinion the treatment of which I complain is foreign to the etiquette of cricket, and calculated to mar the pleasures of a friendly contest, and seriously interfere with that kindliness of feeling and sociality which should characterise the sport, and my only motive for writing this letter is to prevent such consequences.
Personally I hold the Kiama cricketers in high estimation, believing them to have maintained an honorable reputation as such, ever since a love of the game took rest in our district, this being the first instance in which they have left room for complaint.
I beg most emphatically to state, on behalf of the Jerrara players and myself, that we entertain the best of feelings towards the Kiama club, and we sincerely hope nothing on our part will over mar, in the slightest degree, that good feeling which should characterise our friendly cricket matches.
I am, etc.
ONE OF THE JERRARA CRICKETERS.
